Is it?
Today is a somber day—a day for remembering. If you are older than 24 years old, the chances are excellent that you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you first heard of the attacks on our country. Have we as humans improved in our treatment of each other? Sad events this very week would answer that question with a resounding “No.”
I am reminded of a quote that I whole heartedly agree with, by Edward Bok. Are you familiar with who Edward Bok was? If not, you need to look him up and become familiar with him! But in a nutshell, he was an immigrant to the United States, and as an adult he became quite well off financially. Instead of keeping his riches all to himself, he chose to give back to his new homeland—the place that had given him those opportunities. He designed and had built a beautiful gardens, called Bok Tower Gardens, and gifted the gardens to the American people. And the tower part? Ah yes, I am glad you asked about that! The tower part of the gardens is actually a musical instrument, a 205 foot tall carillon, holding 60 bronze bells that are played daily by the carillonneur. The sound is glorious, and the music carries all throughout the extensive gardens. The tower and gardens were built in 1929, and are designated a National Historic Landmark. Located in Lake Wales, Florida, it is well worth the trip if you are ever able to visit. I am sure there must be pictures and videos on YouTube, if you care to look it up, and I hope you do!
And that quote I mentioned? Did you think I had forgotten? Never! Edward Bok is famous for making this statement: “Make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.” History tells us that Edward Bok lived up to this—Will history say the same about you and I?
Twenty four years ago today, some people made decisions that did NOT make this world of ours better or more beautiful—in fact, they added to its ugly darkness. But each of us has our own choice, what we are going to do with our life—add to darkness, or light?
No matter how dark it is around you, let your one light shine brightly!
Until next time,
Friend
