Prepare for Cold Weather

Hello Dear Ones!

How are you doing? If you live near me, I do hope you are managing to stay warm, and when the roads are icy that you are able to stay home. Our area has been experiencing below normal temperatures for sure. Much of the country has been as well. Do you keep some extra supplies in your home in case of necessity? If not, it is a good idea to do so. Some canned food has a long shelf life, and you can have things like ready to eat soups, canned fruits, etc. Make sure you also have a manual can opener to use, in case you lose your electricity!

Emergency supplies can be added to your pantry little by little. No need to break the bank spending money that you do not have.  A few extra things purchased on a regular basis can really add up. Don’t forget to rotate your food storage, so you are putting your most recent shelf stable foods in the back, and pulling the other food forward to eat sooner. Just like the stores do it, your home pantry is your personal “grocery store.”

Non food items that are very good to have can be things like flashlights or camping lanterns.  I have three solar powered lanterns that I love—the top has a small solar panel on it, and I just keep them sitting next to a window where they stay charged up.  They can also be charged by plugging into your electric outlet—but not after you lose your electricity, so keep them charged.  A good idea is to check things like this twice a year, making sure they are holding their charge. I try and remember to check them every July and December.

I found a wonderful summary of cold weather safety from the National Weather Service.  Lots of wisdom here for protecting people, pipes, safety, etc. I linked to it below in case you would like to take a peek at it:

Make sure you are prepared, but also think of others. Can you check on your neighbor? Can you call someone farther away and make sure they are alright?

Spring is coming—my daffodils are up, even though currently covered with snow! Stay warm, and stay safe and help someone else out if you can!

Until next time—

Friend
